Sukethum

Sekathum, situated at approximately 1,640 metres (5,380 ft), is an important trekking settlement on the southern approach to the Kanchenjunga region. Located at the confluence of mountain rivers and surrounded by steep, forested hills, it marks a significant stage in the journey toward the remote Kanchenjunga valleys.

The trail from Sekathum leads deeper into the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, passing through lush forests, waterfalls, suspension bridges and rugged river valleys. The changing landscape offers trekkers a striking introduction to the diverse natural environment of eastern Nepal before the route gradually climbs toward higher Himalayan terrain.

Sekathum is also a culturally significant stop along the trek. The surrounding communities, particularly the Limbu people, have maintained distinctive traditions, languages, customs and ways of life shaped by the mountainous environment. Staying in the village provides trekkers with an opportunity to experience local hospitality and learn more about the communities of the region.

The surrounding forests are rich in biodiversity, with a variety of Himalayan plants, birds and wildlife inhabiting the conservation area. As the trail continues toward Amjilosa, Gyabla and Ghunsa, trekkers experience increasingly remote landscapes and higher elevations.

For trekkers beginning the Kanchenjunga journey, Sekathum is more than an overnight stop. It is one of the first major waypoints where the trail leaves the lower road-accessible areas and enters the wilderness of the Kanchenjunga trekking region.
