From our experience guiding in the Himalaya, spring and autumn are the most reliable seasons for Kanchenjunga. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and fresh mountain landscapes, while autumn is known for crisp air and excellent mountain visibility. Because Kanchenjunga is remote, weather conditions can have a greater effect on transportation and trails than they do in more developed trekking areas. We therefore consider both the season and the specific route when recommending departure dates.

From December through February, temperatures can fall significantly, especially at higher elevations. The monsoon season generally lasts from June through August in Nepal and can bring significant rainfall to eastern Nepal. Lower sections of the Kanchenjunga approach may experience wet and muddy trails, while landslides can affect roads and transportation. Cloud cover may also reduce mountain visibility. Higher elevations can have different weather patterns, but overall conditions are less predictable than during spring and autumn. Trekkers considering a monsoon departure should be prepared for delays and changing route conditions.

The Kanchenjunga region passes through several climatic zones, so weather conditions change considerably as you gain elevation.
