Express Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp Trek -13 Days
The Express Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp Trek is a challenging adventure designed for experienced trekkers who want to experience both sides of Mount Kanchenjunga within a more compact timeframe. The journey combines the spectacular North Base Camp at Pangpema with the South Base Camp area at Oktang, crossing remote valleys and high mountain terrain along the way.
At 8,586 m, Mount Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world. Its remote location in eastern Nepal has helped preserve the wilderness and traditional character of the surrounding region. Trekking here is very different from Nepal's busier routes: the trails are quieter, mountain settlements are more isolated, and modern facilities are limited, particularly at higher elevations.
The adventure begins with the journey from Kathmandu toward eastern Nepal, followed by road travel toward the Kanchenjunga trekking area. Once on the trail, the landscape changes from green hills and forests to increasingly rugged Himalayan terrain.
The northern section takes you through beautiful mountain villages such as Amjilosa, Gyabla, and Ghunsa. Ghunsa is an important settlement on the route and provides an opportunity for acclimatization before heading higher. From Ghunsa, the trail continues toward Kambachen and Lhonak, where the surroundings become increasingly dramatic, with rocky slopes, glaciers, high peaks, and wide alpine valleys.
One of the main objectives is Pangpema, the North Base Camp area of Kanchenjunga, located at approximately 5,140–5,143 m. The approach to Pangpema is a spectacular high-altitude experience, with magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga massif and surrounding mountain landscape.
After exploring the northern side, the route continues toward the southern valleys. The journey across the Sele La passes is one of the most demanding sections of the trek, requiring good fitness and careful pacing. These high mountain passes connect the northern and southern trekking areas and provide dramatic views across the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
Descending toward the southern side, the trail reaches Tseram and Ramche before continuing into the spectacular Yalung Valley. The landscape here is different from the northern approach, with broad alpine valleys, glaciers, rocky mountain slopes, and impressive views of the southern face of Kanchenjunga.
The trek then reaches the Oktang South Base Camp area, at approximately 4,730 m. From Oktang, trekkers can appreciate another extraordinary perspective of the Kanchenjunga massif. Experiencing Pangpema and Oktang on the same journey provides a much broader understanding of the mountain and its surrounding wilderness.
The express nature of this trek means that walking days can be demanding. There is less flexibility than on a longer itinerary, so participants should have good physical fitness and previous high-altitude trekking experience. Despite the faster schedule, acclimatization cannot be rushed. The itinerary should always remain flexible enough to respond to weather, trail conditions, and individual health.
The trek also offers valuable cultural experiences. Villages along the route preserve traditional Himalayan lifestyles, architecture, food, and customs. Ghunsa and other settlements in the higher valleys have strong Tibetan cultural influences, while the lower valleys reflect the diverse communities of eastern Nepal.
The entire journey takes place within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, where forests, alpine ecosystems, glaciers, and mountain habitats support a remarkable variety of Himalayan flora and fauna. The changing landscape—from dense forests to high-altitude wilderness—is one of the defining features of the adventure.
At Kanchenjunga Guides Nepal, we organize the Express North and South Base Camp Trek with experienced local guides who understand the remote trails, mountain conditions, villages, and logistics of the region. Our team handles essential arrangements including permits, transportation, accommodation, guide and porter support, and route planning.
For experienced trekkers with limited time, the Express Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp Trek offers an exceptional opportunity to experience both Pangpema and Oktang in one demanding but rewarding journey. It combines remote wilderness, dramatic mountain scenery, high passes, traditional villages, and the unforgettable experience of trekking beneath one of the world's greatest Himalayan peaks.
Remote Himalayan Trek
This trek takes place in a remote region with limited infrastructure and services.
Experienced Guide Required for Responsible Trekking
Trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide as required for the restricted Kanchenjunga area.
We encourage every trekker to respect local culture, protect the environment, and help preserve the pristine Kanchenjunga region.
