South Base Camp Trek Overview
The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek takes you to the southern side of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain, in 12 days. It is the shortest way to reach a Kanchenjunga base camp and follows one of the quietest trails in eastern Nepal.
From Kathmandu you fly to Bhadrapur and drive through the hills of eastern Nepal to Taplejung and on to Yamphudin (2,080 m), where the trek begins. The trail follows the Simbhuwa Khola through rhododendron, pine and bamboo forest to Tortong and Tseram (3,870 m), where you take a rest day to acclimatise. You then climb into the Yalung Valley to Ramche (4,580 m) and walk beside the Yalung Glacier to Oktang, the South Base Camp (about 4,730 m), facing the south face of Kanchenjunga with Kabru and Rathong close by. You return the same way to Yamphudin and drive back to Taplejung for the flight to Kathmandu.
On the way you stay in family-run lodges, from Limbu farming villages in the lower valleys to simple teahouses at Tseram and Ramche, inside the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Lodges are basic at higher altitude and some trekking days are long, so you need good fitness, but no technical climbing.
Why trek with us: our guides are from the Kanchenjunga region and know every lodge on the route. We arrange the restricted-area, conservation-area and TIMS permits, the Bhadrapur flights and jeeps, and provide one porter for every two trekkers.
Remote Himalayan Trek
This trek takes place in a remote region with limited infrastructure and services.
Experienced Guide Required for Responsible Trekking
Trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide as required for the restricted Kanchenjunga area.
We encourage every trekker to respect local culture, protect the environment, and help preserve the pristine Kanchenjunga region.
