Tortong

Tortong, also known as Torangdin, is a remote trekking stop in the Simbua Khola valley on the southern approach to the Kanchenjunga region of eastern Nepal. Located at approximately 2,980 metres, it sits along the route toward Ramche and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp.

The trail to Tortong passes through dense Himalayan forests, with rhododendron, bamboo and other mountain vegetation covering the steep valley slopes. The forested surroundings make this section of the Kanchenjunga trek particularly scenic and provide habitat for a variety of Himalayan wildlife and birds.

Tortong is an important overnight stopping point on the southern Kanchenjunga route. From here, trekkers continue toward Tseram, followed by the higher settlements and camps of Ramche and Oktang. The route gradually becomes more alpine as it gains elevation toward the Yalung Valley and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp.

Unlike larger settlements such as Ghunsa or Tseram, Tortong is a small and remote trekking location with very limited infrastructure. Its importance comes primarily from its position along the trekking route rather than from permanent settlement facilities.

For trekkers approaching Kanchenjunga South Base Camp from the southern side, Tortong marks an important transition from the forested lower valleys toward the higher alpine landscapes around Tseram, Ramche and Oktang.
