Kanchenjunga South Base Camp

Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, commonly associated with the Oktang viewpoint, is one of the most spectacular destinations in the Kanchenjunga region of eastern Nepal. Located at approximately 4,730 metres (15,518 feet) above sea level, Oktang lies above the Yalung Glacier and provides dramatic views toward the southern face of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Elevation figures can vary slightly between trekking sources depending on the exact viewpoint or reference point used.

The southern approach to Kanchenjunga follows a different landscape from the northern route. The trail gradually climbs through the Simbua Khola valley, passing through forests, traditional mountain settlements, rhododendron landscapes and high alpine terrain before reaching Tseram and then Ramche. Ramche, at approximately 4,580 metres, is commonly used as the final overnight stop before the excursion toward Oktang.

From Ramche, the trail continues toward the Yalung Glacier, following rugged moraine terrain toward Oktang. The journey is demanding because of the altitude and changing terrain, but the reward is an expansive panorama of the Kanchenjunga massif.

From the Oktang viewpoint, trekkers can see the southern side of Kanchenjunga, along with surrounding peaks including Kabru, Rathong and Talung. The Yalung Glacier stretches below the viewpoint, creating a dramatic high-altitude landscape.

The South Base Camp route is also notable for its remoteness. The Kanchenjunga region is a restricted trekking area, and trekkers require the appropriate permits and must follow the applicable guide and group requirements.

Unlike the more heavily visited trekking destinations of Nepal, the southern Kanchenjunga trail generally sees far fewer trekkers. The combination of remote valleys, forests, alpine landscapes and enormous mountain views makes the journey particularly attractive to trekkers looking for a quieter Himalayan experience.

The Journey to Oktang

The southern Kanchenjunga route begins in the lower hills of Taplejung and gradually enters increasingly remote terrain. As trekkers move toward Tseram and Ramche, forests give way to alpine landscapes. The final approach to Oktang crosses rocky moraine terrain beside the Yalung Glacier.

At more than 4,700 metres, the altitude should be taken seriously. A properly planned itinerary allows trekkers to gain elevation gradually and includes suitable acclimatization before attempting the Oktang excursion.

Standing at Oktang with the Yalung Glacier below and the immense southern face of Kanchenjunga rising ahead is the defining experience of the southern approach to the world's third-highest mountain.
