Oktang, Kanchenjunga South Base Camp

Oktang is one of the most spectacular high-altitude destinations on the southern approach to Mount Kanchenjunga in eastern Nepal. Located at approximately 4,730 metres (15,518 feet), Oktang sits above the Yalung Glacier and provides an extraordinary perspective of the southern face of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m).

The journey to Oktang takes trekkers deep into the remote Yalung Valley. The southern Kanchenjunga route passes through traditional settlements and forests before reaching the higher settlements of Tseram and Ramche. From Ramche, the trail continues toward the Yalung Glacier and the Oktang viewpoint.

As the trail climbs above Ramche, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged. Forests disappear and are replaced by rocky moraines, glaciers and open alpine terrain. The final approach to Oktang is demanding because of the altitude and uneven glacial landscape.

Oktang is particularly important because it is associated with Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. From the viewpoint, trekkers can see the impressive southern side of Kanchenjunga together with surrounding peaks such as Kabru, Rathong and Talung. The Yalung Glacier stretches through the valley below, creating a dramatic Himalayan setting.

The destination is generally visited as an excursion from Ramche, rather than as a conventional overnight settlement. There are very limited facilities at this altitude, so trekkers normally return to lower accommodation after visiting the viewpoint.

Because Oktang is situated above 4,700 metres, proper acclimatization and a gradual ascent are important. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the high Himalaya, and trekkers should be prepared for cold temperatures, wind and potentially difficult trail conditions.

For trekkers exploring the southern Kanchenjunga route, Oktang represents the culmination of the journey into the Yalung Valley. Its combination of glaciers, dramatic mountain walls and remote wilderness makes it one of the defining locations of the Kanchenjunga region.
