Pangpema - Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Pangpema is the spectacular northern base camp area of Mount Kanchenjunga, located at approximately 5,140 metres (16,864 feet) in the remote Kanchenjunga region of eastern Nepal. It is the highest major destination on the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek and offers trekkers an extraordinary view of the northern face of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m).

The journey to Pangpema takes trekkers deep into the remote Himalayan wilderness. From Kambachen, the trail continues toward Lhonak, following the upper Kanchenjunga valley through increasingly barren and rugged terrain. From Lhonak, the route continues toward Pangpema across rocky moraines and high-altitude landscapes surrounded by glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks.

At Pangpema, the landscape is dramatically different from the forests and villages encountered during the lower sections of the trek. Vegetation is extremely limited, while glaciers, rocky slopes and snow-covered mountains dominate the surroundings. The enormous northern face of Kanchenjunga provides the defining backdrop of the area.

Pangpema is generally reached as a destination excursion from Lhonak, allowing trekkers to make the journey to the base camp area and return to lower accommodation on the same day. Because the trail reaches more than 5,000 metres, the section requires careful acclimatization, a steady walking pace and appropriate preparation for high-altitude conditions.

The route to Pangpema passes through one of Nepal's less-developed trekking environments. There are few permanent facilities at this altitude, and conditions can change quickly depending on weather and season. Trekkers should therefore travel with an experienced guide and carry suitable clothing, equipment, water and other essentials.

For trekkers exploring the Kanchenjunga region, Pangpema represents the culmination of the northern approach. Standing beneath the immense walls of Kanchenjunga, surrounded by glaciers and high Himalayan peaks, makes this one of the most memorable destinations on the entire trek.
