Lhonak is more than a stop on the Kanchenjunga trek—it is the final high-altitude staging point before Pangpema, the North Base Camp. At around 4,780–4,790 m, trekkers are already in a demanding glacial environment, with very limited facilities and exposed terrain.

Lhonak – Last Settlement Beneath Kanchenjunga
Lhonak is one of the highest and most remote settlements on the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek in eastern Nepal. Situated at approximately 4,780 meters (15,682 feet), Lhonak lies in a vast glacial valley surrounded by rugged mountains, rocky landscapes, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the Kanchenjunga region.
For trekkers following the Kanchenjunga Circuit, reaching Lhonak marks a major milestone. Beyond this remote settlement, the trail continues toward Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, taking trekkers deeper into the high Himalayan wilderness.
The Last Settlement Before Pangpema
Lhonak is commonly regarded as the last settlement before Pangpema. The journey from Kambachen to Lhonak gradually leaves behind the forests and greener valleys, replacing them with an increasingly barren landscape shaped by altitude, glaciers, and powerful Himalayan weather.
From Lhonak, trekkers continue along the glacial valley toward Pangpema, where the northern face of Mount Kanchenjunga comes dramatically into view.
A High-Altitude Himalayan Landscape
The surroundings of Lhonak are stark yet incredibly beautiful. The settlement sits beside the Kanchenjunga Glacier, with enormous mountains rising on either side of the valley.
The landscape features rocky moraines, glaciers, snow-covered peaks, and wide open Himalayan valleys. The absence of dense vegetation and modern development gives Lhonak a true wilderness character.
Gateway to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp
Lhonak serves as an important overnight and staging point for the journey to Pangpema (5,143 m / 16,873 ft). Trekkers generally leave Lhonak early for the challenging journey toward the North Base Camp and return to Lhonak afterward.
This approach allows trekkers to experience Pangpema during the day while keeping overnight accommodation at the lower elevation of Lhonak.
Acclimatization and Preparation
At nearly 4,800 meters, Lhonak is already at a very high altitude. Trekkers should approach this section carefully, maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and follow proper acclimatization practices.
