Why Are So Many of Our Guides Named Pasang?

If you have ever trekked in the Himalayas with our team, you may have noticed something interesting: there seems to be a lot of people named Pasang!

Perhaps you met Pasang at the beginning of your journey, heard another guide call out to Pasang along the trail, or discovered that more than one person in our wider mountain community shares the same name.

So, why is Pasang such a familiar name in the Himalayan trekking world?

The answer lies in the rich naming traditions of the Sherpa and Tibetan communities, the cultural heritage of the mountains, and the generations of people who have helped travellers explore the Himalayas.

The cultural meaning behind the name Pasang

Pasang is a familiar name in Sherpa and Tibetan communities. In traditional Tibetan naming customs, Pasang is associated with Friday.

Traditionally, names connected to the day of the week can be given according to the day a child is born. This is one reason certain names appear repeatedly within Himalayan communities.

Of course, not everyone named Pasang necessarily follows the same naming tradition, and the meaning or origin of an individual's name may depend on their family and personal history.

Still, the name carries a familiar sound throughout many Himalayan communities, making it one that trekkers may hear more than once during their travels.

A name shared by a mountain community

The Himalayas are home to communities with deep connections to the mountains, including the Sherpa people of Nepal's Himalayan regions.

Family ties, village connections, shared traditions, and generations of cultural history help shape these communities. As a result, it is entirely possible to meet several people with the same first name, especially when travelling with a local team.

When several of our guides, porters, or mountain colleagues are called Pasang, it is not necessarily a coincidence. It reflects the naming traditions and community connections that are part of everyday life in the Himalayas.

And while the name might initially confuse our visitors, it often becomes a memorable part of their trekking experience!

More than a name: the people behind your journey

Every mountain guide has a story of their own.

Behind each name is an individual with personal experiences, family responsibilities, local knowledge, and a unique relationship with the mountains. Our guides help travellers navigate changing trails, understand local customs, discover mountain villages, and appreciate the landscapes that make the Himalayas so special.

Their work requires preparation, patience, responsibility, and a deep understanding of the conditions on the trail.

A shared name does not make these individuals the same. Each guide brings their own personality, skills, humour, and experiences to the journey.

That is what makes getting to know our team such an important part of travelling with local guides.

The next time you meet a Pasang…

If you trek with us and meet more than one Pasang, do not worry if you need a moment to remember who is who!

Ask about their village, their family, their experiences in the mountains, or the story behind their name. You might discover a fascinating story that makes your journey even more meaningful.

You can also learn a few local greetings, listen to the stories shared along the trail, and take the time to understand the communities that make Himalayan trekking possible.

These small moments of cultural exchange often become some of the most memorable parts of an adventure.

Proud of our roots, proud of our guides

At Kanchenjunga Guides, we believe that a great Himalayan journey is about much more than reaching a destination. It is also about the people you meet, the cultures you experience, and the connections you make along the way.

So, why do we seem to have so many guides named Pasang?

Part of the answer is tradition, part is community, and part is simply the wonderful reality of working with people whose lives are closely connected to the Himalayas.

And the next time you hear someone call out “Pasang!” on a mountain trail, you will know there may be a little more history behind that familiar name.

Come for the mountains, stay for the stories, and get to know the people who make your Himalayan adventure unforgettable.
