Amjilosa

Amjilosa is a remote mountain settlement on the Kanchenjunga trekking route in eastern Nepal. Located at approximately 2,510 metres (8,235 feet), it sits along the trail between Sekathum and Gyabla and is one of the early overnight stops on the journey toward the upper Kanchenjunga region.

The trek to Amjilosa takes visitors away from the lower road-accessible areas and deeper into the mountainous landscape of the Kanchenjunga region. The trail follows steep hillsides and river valleys, passing through forests, waterfalls and traditional mountain settlements.

Amjilosa is particularly known for its peaceful surroundings and remote character. The settlement is surrounded by forested slopes, with the landscape becoming increasingly mountainous as the trail continues toward Gyabla, Ghunsa and the higher valleys.

For trekkers beginning the Kanchenjunga trek from the Taplejung side, Amjilosa is an important acclimatization and overnight point. The journey to the village involves substantial uphill and downhill walking, making the section physically demanding despite its relatively moderate altitude compared with the higher destinations farther along the route.

From Amjilosa, the trail continues toward Gyabla, gradually gaining elevation before reaching Ghunsa, one of the most important settlements in the northern Kanchenjunga region. From Ghunsa, trekkers can continue toward Kambachen, Lhonak and Pangpema or cross the high passes toward the southern side of the circuit.

The village provides a glimpse into the traditional mountain communities of eastern Nepal. Accommodation is generally simple, with basic teahouses providing food and lodging for trekkers.

Amjilosa is therefore more than a stopping point on the itinerary. It marks an important transition into the remote Kanchenjunga landscape, where forested valleys, steep mountain trails and traditional settlements gradually give way to the high alpine environment farther north.

The Journey to Amjilosa

The trail from Sekathum to Amjilosa follows the mountainous valley through dense vegetation and steep terrain. Several sections involve sustained climbs and descents, while suspension bridges and narrow mountain paths add to the character of the journey.

After Amjilosa, the trail continues toward Gyabla and eventually Ghunsa. As trekkers gain altitude, the vegetation gradually changes and the landscape becomes more alpine.
